About the Organization

The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) is a renowned international non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to the field of transitional justice.

ICTJ works across societies and borders to address the root causes and consequences of massive human rights violations, affirm victims' dignity, fight impunity, and promote responsive and accountable institutions.

The Uganda office is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Program Associate to support its ongoing transitional justice initiatives in the country.

Position Overview

This is a full-time consultancy position based in Kampala, Uganda, reporting directly to the Head of ICTJ's Uganda Office.

The initial contract is for a duration of two months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and program needs.

Preference will be given to Ugandan nationals who possess deep knowledge of the local context and legal frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive research and writing tasks, including compiling comparative information on transitional justice mechanisms, performing detailed legal research, and drafting monthly situation reports that track developments in the Ugandan context.

Prepare high-quality memos, country papers, and other written materials for publication, ensuring accuracy and adherence to ICTJ's standards.

Lead capacity building activities, including organizing and facilitating workshops, seminars, and training sessions for civil society partners, government officials, and community leaders.

Liaise with a broad range of stakeholders, including victims' groups, human rights organizations, legal experts, and international partners, to foster collaboration and information sharing.

Support the planning and execution of program events, including logistical coordination, participant management, and documentation of proceedings.

Assist in monitoring and evaluating program activities, contributing to reports that measure impact and inform future strategies.

Qualifications and Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in law, political science, international relations, human rights, or a related field. A Master's degree is strongly preferred.

Minimum of three years of professional experience in transitional justice, human rights, rule of law, or a closely related area.

Demonstrated ability to conduct legal and policy research, synthesize complex information, and produce clear, well-structured written outputs.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural team and with diverse stakeholders.

Proven experience in organizing workshops, training events, or similar capacity building initiatives.

Fluency in English is required; proficiency in local Ugandan languages such as Luganda or Acholi is a strong advantage.

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
