Job Summary
Alpaca, a US-headquartered global leader in agent-first brokerage infrastructure, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its New Markets team. This is a fully remote position open to candidates in South America, North America, Central America, and EMEA. As a Senior Engineer, you will design, implement, and maintain the systems that power millions of brokerage accounts and billions of dollars in trades. You will lead regional recruitment initiatives, mentor talent, and act as the operational reliability lead during regional business hours. This role offers the autonomy to architect scalable solutions, collaborate with global teams, and contribute to Alpaca's mission of opening financial services to everyone on the planet. Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop a highly scalable, mission-critical brokerage system supporting stocks, ETFs, options, crypto, and fixed income.
- Enhance middle- and back-office systems, including gRPC microservices, React-based internal administration UIs, and third-party vendor integrations.
- Collaborate with core teams to evolve the core framework for multiple languages, currencies, and markets.
- Coordinate with tech leads across regions synchronously and asynchronously via Slack and occasional meetings outside standard hours.
- Serve as incident commander during regional business hours, ensuring proactive 24x7 stability and leading troubleshooting efforts.
- Troubleshoot incidents and bugs to maintain system integrity and high performance.
- Navigate regulatory requirements and build scalable solutions to support international growth.
- Participate in on-call rotations for timely engineering projects.
- Mentor engineers on engineering principles and best practices, fostering Alpaca's culture in the region.
Role Requirements & Qualifications
- Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive mindset.
- Proficiency in Go or similar backend languages, with expertise in designing robust system architectures.
- Excellent communication skills for collaborating with global teams, regulators, vendors, and stakeholders.
- Ability to lead as incident commander and troubleshoot issues with authority.
- Solid computer science fundamentals and proven software engineering architecture experience.
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote, globally distributed team and under pressure.
- Strategic thinking to translate technical concepts into business strategies.
- Experience with event-driven design.
- No specific degree is required; equivalent experience is accepted.
- Nice-to-have: experience with AI tooling, startups, domain-driven design, financial services, trading platforms, or regulatory compliance.

Additionally, the company provides health benefits, a one-time $500 home-office setup allowance, and a $150 monthly stipend via Brex Card. Total compensation may exceed $250,000 when including stock options, especially for candidates in high-cost-of-living regions.
