Member of Technical Staff (Software Engineer, Comet and Native Apps)

About the Role

Perplexity AI is seeking experienced Generalist Software Engineers to join our Comet and Perplexity native application teams. Our mission is to reshape knowledge work through high-impact desktop and mobile applications that leverage advanced AI capabilities.

As a Member of Technical Staff, you will be a core contributor to the architecture, development, and deployment of our flagship products, working across multiple codebases and platforms to deliver seamless, intelligent user experiences.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate closely with product teams to define, implement, and iterate on novel mobile and desktop experiences, ensuring alignment with strategic product goals and user needs.

Work hand-in-hand with design teams to craft fast, intuitive, and visually polished user interfaces that set new standards for productivity and knowledge management.

Leverage Perplexity's own Computer use and other cutting-edge agentic coding tools to accelerate development cycles, improve code quality, and explore new paradigms for human-AI collaboration in software engineering.

Partner with data science and machine learning teams to instrument, analyze, and continuously improve the end-to-end user experience, using real-world usage data to drive feature development and performance optimization.

Work closely with infrastructure and quality assurance teams on deployment processes, including continuous integration, automated testing, release management, and production monitoring to ensure high reliability and rapid iteration.

Take ownership of major product surfaces, driving them from concept through launch and beyond, while mentoring junior team members and contributing to a culture of technical excellence.

Requirements

4+ years of industry experience in software engineering, with a proven track record of shipping high-quality, production-grade software at scale.

Strong experience in building and shipping native applications for mobile (iOS/Android) or desktop platforms, with deep knowledge of platform-specific UI frameworks, lifecycle management, and performance optimization.

Demonstrated architecture experience in writing code that is understandable by both human developers and AI agents, emphasizing clarity, modularity, and testability.

Deep understanding of application performance profiling, memory management, and rendering pipelines to deliver snappy, responsive user interfaces.

Ability to own projects and surfaces end-to-end, proactively driving them forward with minimal supervision, while collaborating effectively across cross-functional teams.

Proficiency in at least two of the following: Chromium internals, Rust, Kotlin, Swift, or TypeScript, with a willingness to learn and ramp up quickly on new technologies.
