Job Summary

This is a remote, full-time opportunity for an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to join a reputed communications technology company developing market-leading solutions for defense applications. The role focuses on owning the embedded systems software for Electronic Warfare (EW) programs, from low-level drivers to application-level software, and includes significant responsibilities in DevOps, CI/CD pipeline architecture, and systems integration. This position requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance. The successful candidate will work remotely but must be willing to travel occasionally to California or Texas for integration and collaboration. This is a unique chance to contribute to critical national security projects while working from anywhere in the U.S. with a flexible schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the embedded systems software lifecycle for Electronic Warfare programs, from requirements analysis through deployment and maintenance.
  • Develop and maintain low-level device drivers, board support packages, and hardware abstraction layers for custom defense hardware.
  • Implement application-level software modules that interface with RF systems, signal processing algorithms, and network protocols.
  • Architect, build, and maintain modern CI/CD pipelines to automate build, test, and deployment processes for embedded targets.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware engineers, systems engineers, and other software teams to ensure seamless integration of software and hardware components.
  • Translate complex network algorithms into efficient, reliable embedded C/C+ code, optimizing for performance and memory constraints.
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and technical documentation to ensure high-quality, maintainable code.
  • Support system integration testing, debugging, and troubleshooting in both simulated and field environments.
  • Contribute to DevOps best practices, including version control, automated testing, and configuration management.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies in embedded systems, electronic warfare, and defense communications to propose innovative solutions.

Role Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Equivalent practical experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in embedded software development, with a strong focus on C/C+ and Python.
  • Proven experience with Embedded Linux, including kernel configuration, device tree modifications, and cross-compilation toolchains.
  • U.S. citizenship is mandatory; applicants must be willing and able to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Must be based in the U.S. and available for occasional travel to California or Texas.
  • Previous experience in the defense industry is strongly preferred, particularly in military communications or Electronic Warfare systems.
  • Familiarity with RF concepts, digital signal processing, and network protocols is a distinct advantage.
  • Experience with DevOps tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, Docker, and Kubernetes is highly desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.

Skills Inventory

Essential Skills:

  • Expert proficiency in C and C+ programming languages.
  • Strong command of Python for scripting, automation, and test development.
  • In-depth knowledge of Embedded Linux development, including Yocto or Buildroot.
  • Experience with version control systems, particularly Git.
  • Understanding of real-time operating systems (RTOS) and bare-metal programming.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated build systems.
  • Knowledge of hardware-software interface, including UART, SPI, I2C, and GPIO.

Preferred Skills:

  • Prior work on Electronic Warfare systems or military communication platforms.
  • Experience with software-defined radio (SDR) and RF signal processing.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity practices in embedded systems.
  • Knowledge of Agile development methodologies.
  • Experience with test automation frameworks like Google Test or CTest.
  • Active DoD Secret clearance or higher.

Salary & Compensation Estimation

The estimated annual salary for this role ranges from $120,000 to $160,000 USD, based on market data for senior embedded software engineers in the defense sector. The final offer will depend on experience, qualifications, and geographic location. The position includes an annual bonus and a comprehensive benefits package, which may include health insurance, 401(k) matching, paid time off, and professional development stipends. Given the remote nature, salary may be adjusted based on cost-of-living in the candidate's location, but remains competitive.
