Job Summary

Walmart Global Tech is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead platform engineering initiatives that deliver scalable, cloud-native solutions and AI-enhanced applications. This role drives the full software development lifecycle across multiple teams, ensuring high availability, reliability, and innovation in distributed systems. The position requires strategic technical leadership, mentorship, and collaboration with cross-functional partners to align engineering efforts with business goals. The successful candidate will champion continuous improvement, technical excellence, and the integration of advanced technologies to support Walmart’s evolving platform capabilities and long-term roadmap. This is a remote-friendly position within the United States, offering the opportunity to work on systems that impact millions of users and redefine retail technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver platform capabilities including infrastructure, tooling, and ML frameworks aligned with roadmap priorities.
  • Drive full software development lifecycle activities such as coding, testing, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance.
  • Apply cloud-native architecture principles to ensure scalable, resilient, and agile systems.
  • Lead system design reviews to validate quality and alignment with architectural standards.
  • Build AI-driven applications integrating ML components for automation and multi-step reasoning.
  • Mentor engineers, influence technical decisions, and promote engineering excellence.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to define user problems and translate them into actionable technical requirements.
  • Continuously improve processes, tools, and products through innovation and data-driven practices.
  • Ensure high availability and reliability of distributed systems supporting supplier-facing analytics.
  • Partner with data engineering, product intelligence, and supplier experience teams to deliver real-time insights.

Role Requirements & Qualifications

  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Option 2: 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards and assistive technologies is a plus.
  • Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Skills Inventory

  • Proven expertise in cloud-native architecture, including microservices, containers, and automation.
  • Strong proficiency in software design patterns, API design, and platform development.
  • Experience leading full stack software development lifecycle activities, including coding using Java, React, GraphQL, and BigQuery.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD deployment and observability tools.
  • Ability to conduct system design reviews ensuring alignment with architectural best practices.

Salary & Compensation Estimation

The annual salary range for this position is $110,000 to $220,000, depending on experience and location. Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Walmart offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, vision, and dental insurance, 401(k) with company match, stock purchase plan, company-paid life insurance, paid time off (PTO) including sick leave, parental leave, family care leave, and more.
