Software Engineer

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain robust software applications that support MTN’s digital services, including mobile money platforms, value-added services, and internal tools.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, UI/UX designers, and quality assurance engineers, to deliver high-quality solutions on schedule.
• Write clean, scalable, and maintainable code using best practices and industry standards, with a focus on performance and security.
• Participate in agile ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives, and actively contribute to continuous improvement of team processes.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve software defects and performance issues in production environments, ensuring high uptime and reliability.
• Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers to uphold code quality and knowledge sharing.
• Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and suggest innovative solutions to enhance existing systems and drive business growth.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, including design documents, API references, and deployment guides.
• Integrate third-party services and APIs, and ensure seamless data flow between systems.
• Support the deployment of applications to cloud or on-premises infrastructure, using CI/CD pipelines and containerization where applicable.

Role Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field. A master’s degree is an added advantage.
• Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in software development, with a proven track record of delivering production-ready applications.
• Strong experience with one or more programming languages such as Java, Python, C#, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Hands-on experience with agile development methodologies (Scrum or Kanban) and familiarity with tools like Jira or Trello.
• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB) and writing efficient queries.
• Familiarity with version control systems, particularly Git, and collaborative development workflows.
• Knowledge of web frameworks such as Spring Boot, Django, Node.js, or similar.
• Understanding of RESTful API design and integration, and microservices architecture.
• Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and containerization tools like Docker is preferred.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in local languages is a plus.

Salary & Compensation Estimation

Based on industry standards for software engineers in Uganda and MTN’s compensation structure, the estimated annual base salary for this role ranges from 50,000,000 to 80,000,000 UGX (approximately USD 13,500 to USD 21,500). This estimate accounts for the candidate’s experience level, with senior engineers earning at the higher end. MTN Uganda also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement savings contributions, performance bonuses, and professional development allowances. Actual compensation will be aligned with the company’s pay scales and the selected candidate’s qualifications.
