Senior Software Engineer

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable, and high-performance software applications that support MTN's core business operations and digital services.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and quality assurance, to gather requirements, define technical specifications, and deliver features that meet business objectives.
• Write clean, maintainable, and testable code following industry best practices, including code reviews, unit testing, and continuous integration.
• Ensure system reliability and uptime by proactively monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving production issues in a timely manner.
• Participate in architectural discussions and contribute to the evolution of our microservices and cloud-based infrastructure.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, providing technical guidance and fostering a culture of knowledge sharing.
• Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends, evaluating and recommending tools and frameworks that can enhance our development processes.
• Optimize application performance, focusing on response times, throughput, and resource utilization.
• Implement and enforce security best practices to protect sensitive customer and corporate data.
• Work closely with DevOps teams to streamline deployment pipelines and ensure smooth releases.
• Document code, technical architecture, and operational procedures clearly for future reference and onboarding.
• Participate in agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives, to ensure timely delivery of commitments.

Role Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field from a recognized institution.
• Master's degree in a relevant field is an added advantage.
• Professional certifications such as AWS Certified Developer, Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate, or Oracle Java Certified Professional are preferred.
• A minimum of 5 to 7 years of professional software development experience, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead role.
• Proven experience with modern programming languages such as Java, Python, Node.js, or C#.
• Strong understanding of software architecture patterns, including microservices, event-driven architecture, and RESTful APIs.
• Experience with front-end technologies like React, Angular, or Vue.js is required.
• Hands-on experience with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).
• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, including deployment and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Experience with version control tools such as Git and CI/CD pipelines.
• Knowledge of telecom industry standards and protocols (e.g., SMPP, CAMEL, IN) is a distinct advantage.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking abilities.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Proven leadership skills with the ability to guide a team and manage multiple priorities.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
• Availability to work outside regular hours when needed to resolve critical incidents.

Skills Inventory

• Proficiency in backend languages: Java, Python, Node.js, or C#.

Salary & Compensation Estimation

Based on the seniority of this role and the Uganda market, we estimate the annual gross salary to be between 120,000,000 and 180,000,000 Ugandan Shillings (approx. 32,000 to 48,000 USD).
