Edge IoT Developer

Role Overview

• Cosmoquick is seeking an experienced Edge IoT Developer to join our dynamic team in Nairobi. This full-time role involves designing, developing, and deploying edge computing solutions for Internet of Things (IoT) applications, focusing on real-time data processing, low-latency analytics, and secure device communication. As part of Kenya's growing innovation hub, you will collaborate with fintech and mobile developers to create scalable IoT systems that drive business value across industries such as agriculture, logistics, and smart cities.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect and implement edge computing frameworks that enable on-device data processing and decision-making, reducing reliance on cloud infrastructure and improving response times for IoT devices.
• Develop and maintain firmware and software for IoT sensors, gateways, and microcontrollers using languages such as C, C+, Python, or Rust, ensuring efficient resource utilization and power management.
• Integrate edge devices with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub, Google Cloud IoT) for secure data synchronization, remote monitoring, and over-the-air updates.
• Design and optimize communication protocols including MQTT, CoAP, HTTP/2, and WebSockets to ensure reliable data flow across heterogeneous networks in constrained environments.
• Implement robust security measures including device authentication, encryption, and secure boot to protect sensitive data and prevent unauthorized access in edge deployments.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams of software engineers, data scientists, and hardware specialists to define system requirements, conduct performance testing, and troubleshoot issues in production environments.
• Stay current with emerging technologies in edge AI, 5G, LPWAN, and time-sensitive networking to continuously improve system architecture and propose innovative solutions.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical field.
• Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in IoT development, embedded systems, or edge computing, with a proven track record of delivering production-ready solutions.
• Strong proficiency in at least one compiled language (C/C+, Rust) and one scripting language (Python, JavaScript), along with experience in real-time operating systems like FreeRTOS or Zephyr.
• In-depth understanding of networking protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, Zigbee, LoRaWAN, Bluetooth LE) and familiarity with edge analytics using machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow Lite or ONNX Runtime.
• Experience with version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), and orchestration tools (Kubernetes) for edge environments is highly desirable.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced startup environment while managing multiple priorities.
