Job Summary

Walmart Global Tech is seeking a visionary Principal Software Engineer to join the newly formed Global Governance Risk Technology team within Enterprise Business Services (EBS). This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of risk, compliance, and privacy solutions for one of the world's largest retailers. As a principal engineer, you will define platform strategy, drive architectural excellence, and lead a team of engineers in a fast-paced, cloud-native environment. You will work on cutting-edge technologies, including Agentic AI and machine learning, to deliver scalable, high-performance applications that serve millions of customers and associates. Key Responsibilities

  • Define platform strategy and develop architecture that enables scalable development across multiple teams, adopting software excellence principles of reusability, reliability, availability, and resilience.
  • Navigate ambiguous problem definitions and develop technology strategy that works backward from the customer, collaborating with Walmart Supply Chain tech teams across Retail and DotCom business, as well as international expansions.
  • Adopt and envision new age technology solutions using Agentic AI and related technologies, driving innovations and challenging the status quo of software engineering.
  • Lead and participate in medium- to large-scale projects by reviewing project requirements and translating them into technical solutions, partnering with product management, technical program managers, business, and user experience teams.
  • Lead the work of a small group of engineers, including offshore associates, for assigned engineering projects by providing pertinent documents, direction, and examples.
  • Identify short- and long-term solutions and timelines, review and provide feedback for proposed solutions, and perform design and code reviews of changes.
  • Engage in hands-on development of n-tier applications using Microservices, Java/J2EE, and related technologies.
  • Analyze business requirements, storyboards, and similar artifacts of the scrum process, working in an agile development environment with quick turnaround time and iterative builds.
  • Work cross-functionally with various teams: product management, various product lines, or business units to drive forward results, demonstrating commitment to team success and positive team dynamics.
  • Mentor and role model for software engineers and product partners, and be a true partner to Engineering leadership.

Role Requirements & Qualifications

  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Option 2: 7 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Experience with SCRUM and/or Extreme Programming methodologies.
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, with knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards and assistive technologies.

Skills Inventory

  • Expert in designing and implementing REST API web services using Spring Boot.
  • Expert in backend development with highly hands-on experience in Node.js, Java/J2EE, Spring, SQL, Hibernate, JavaScript, and HTML.
  • Expert in running fully automated, end-to-end CI/CD processes.
  • Expert in cloud technologies and related application development.
  • Expert in platform solutions and delivering scalable, highly performant applications.
  • Strong experience in persistent storage technologies, including Relational Databases and NoSQL.
  • Good experience in developing solutions with GenAI/Agentic AI and machine learning technologies.
  • Good experience in UI technologies like React Web, React Native, and React JS.
  • Good experience with development tools such as Git, Maven, and Splunk, with preferred usage of Co-pilot integrated IDEs including Windsurf.
  • Proficiency in testing and troubleshooting using JUnit tests.

Salary & Compensation Estimation

Walmart offers a competitive compensation package for this role. The annual base salary ranges from $110,000 to $220,000 for positions based in Bentonville, Arkansas, and from $143,000 to $286,000 for positions based in Sunnyvale, California. Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses, stock options, and a comprehensive benefits package. Benefits include a 401(k) match, stock purchase plan, paid maternity and parental leave, paid time off, and multiple health plans. The total compensation package is designed to reward performance and support long-term financial well-being.
