Job Summary

Insight Global is seeking an experienced Embedded Linux / Middleware Software Engineer to join a dynamic team focused on building the software layer that collects data from devices and transmits it to the cloud, powering next-generation In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) platforms. This is a full-time contract engagement that can be performed remotely, with a preference for candidates based near Austin, TX or Palo Alto, CA. The ideal candidate thrives at the intersection of embedded systems, distributed services, and modern Linux development, and will be responsible for designing and implementing embedded software using modern C+ and Rust on Linux platforms. This role offers a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology, collaborate with hardware teams, and contribute to the evolution of connected vehicle systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement embedded application services using C+ and Rust running on Embedded Linux platforms.
  • Develop platform-level and system-level services for IVI, defining interfaces and enabling communication between hardware, applications, and cloud services.
  • Interpret High-Level Design documents (HLDs) and schema definitions to determine data collection requirements and data flow through the system.
  • Collaborate with hardware teams on board bring-up, schematic review, and integration of software with custom hardware.
  • Utilize Yocto for building and customizing Embedded Linux systems.
  • Work with distributed components across the IVI platform to ensure seamless data collection and transmission.
  • Troubleshoot system-level issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, GDB, and JTAG to diagnose and resolve hardware-software integration problems.
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and agile development processes to deliver high-quality software.
  • Document software designs, interfaces, and integration procedures for maintainability and knowledge sharing.

Role Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field; equivalent work experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in embedded software development, with a strong focus on Linux platforms.
  • Proven experience with C+ and Rust programming languages in an embedded context.
  • Hands-on experience with Yocto Project for building custom Linux distributions.
  • Experience with board bring-up, schematic review, and hardware-software integration.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems and middleware technologies.
  • Strong debugging skills using tools such as GDB, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

Salary & Compensation Estimation

The hourly rate for this position is estimated between $80 and $110 per hour, depending on years of experience, education, and tool relevancy. This translates to an annualized compensation of approximately $166,000 to $228,000 based on a standard 40-hour work week. Contract positions may not include benefits such as health insurance or paid time off, but offer flexibility and the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology.
